A hairstylist rented this storefront in 1985 and became an owner in 1995. Her son and daughter are putting forty-eight homes on it. Nobody sold.
Lucretia Clark opened Renaissance Hair Salon at 3409 West 54th Street. Red carpet on the steps, triangles she had painted on the wall, four dryer chairs in a row.
Her son swept the floor and answered the phone. Half the block sat in those chairs at one time or another.
When the building came up for sale in 1995, Lucretia bought in. The money came from her husband, Henry Clark, out of his family's inheritance.
A truck driver who worked nights and a hairstylist who worked days now held a deed on Crenshaw.

On July 2, 2021, Regenaissance LLC — Jamial and his sister Bridgette Reed — took full ownership of the property. Praxis Development Group came on as development partner, and KFA Architecture designed a six-story building for the corner.
On December 15, 2022, the Los Angeles City Planning Commission approved it unanimously. From the dais: "More projects should be like this one." By late 2024 the building stood empty, waiting on the next chapter.
Read the sign on the rendering. Forty-one years after she rented it, the ground floor of a six-story building says the same thing the storefront said in 1985. Forty-eight homes sit on top of it, six of them set aside for very-low-income families, and the deed still reads Clark.
